Discuss the instrumentation and the vocals (e.g. solo, chorus – call and answer) 6. 1. Discuss “cultural context” meaning of the songs, and appropriate dancing style: Andalusian/Spanish Flamenco, tribal, Hawaiian,
2. Define musical phrasing, and finger cymbal patterns
3. Note rhythms and dance style: Wahda 4/4, and Ayub 2/4
4. Musical structure and styling: Fast Taxim in Dalaa style, maqam scale runs, leit motifs.
5. Musicality and dance dynamics of magical maqam patterns in a taxim full of drama and depth of feeling from musical dynamics from varying tones, sound levels, and timing.
6. Discuss the instrumentation, musicality, and the vocals (e.g. solo, chorus – call and answer)
7. Apply Ma*Shuqa Method structure and instruction for dance movement and dance styling, movement combinations, fan veil: matching musicality and rhythms e.g. movement flow, traveling steps,.

Musicality and Movement Workshop 3 with Ma*Shuqa
Workshop 3: Saturday, May 5, 2018 2:00 – 4:30 pm, $25
Workshop 3 features Arabic Music of Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen Bring finger cymbals, veils, notebooks and listen, learn, and understand the music from the Arabian Passion CD by Nazir Latouf. Rrecorded “live” – try your hand dancing different dance styles and learn to coordinate musicality with dance movements, for example: stylized veil movements, undulations with flowing veil, shimmies with traveling steps. Learn about the differences between Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian, Yemenese, and Egypt music and styling. Dance to different instruments: violin, oud, kanun, ney, doumbeq, bass, kanun, and guitar. Try creative movement styling and try your hand at playing finger cymbals in syncopated rhythmic styling with guitar and finger cymbals on the recording. Discuss “cultural context dancing style: Dynamic taxim, debke line dancing to davul. Maksum Wahda 4/4, Nawari, Khaleegy, Ayub 2/4 Soulful solo oud and mawwal singing, maqam scale runs, leit motifs. Syrian musicality dynamics and depth, taxim tones, sound, timing and vocalization. Instrumental development of maqams after the initial “mis-en scene” (also called mergence) Learn about uulations/saghareets – different types and styles, and how these sounds and shouts fit in performance.

The Second annual HOT RAQS will take place on June 30-July 1, 2018 in the quaint old town area of Clovis, CA (near Fresno in the Central Valley). The event boasts: -All day performances from competitors and Festival Stage dancers -Shopping with our fantastic and eclectic vendors -Workshops with world class instructors -Evening Gala Shows -Live Music with the world famous Arabic Accordionist Elias Lammam! -A fantastic, safe, gorgeous venue with lots of free, covered parking, and super convenient location. The competition will set itself apart by placing emphasis on professional development and everyone will walk away with invaluable feed back from Season 1 winner of "Project Belly Dance", Andalee, via private critique and review of your performance. *Note: There is a unique and innovative "Non-Compete" category for those wanting feedback from judges and Andalee but do not wish to compete directly. Wow! In addition to the Professional Cabaret soloist, Professional Fusion soloist, and Apprentice level soloist, and Troupes there will be a competition for those drummers in our community! We hope there is something for everyone and will also offer open festival stage spots for those wanting to perform but no wanting to compete! We encourage participants to take some classes with the experienced and respected teachers offering workshops during the weekend: Faisal Zedan, Innah of Iowa, Maria Sokolova, Aubre Hill, & Courtney Duchardt! The venue is in the big beautiful Clovis Veterans Memorial District Ballroom with lots of space and next door to the Clovis Cole hotel and lots of restaurants, shopping, Farmer's market, & other services. Old Town Clovis is a destination itself as a thriving and vibrant Western themed downtown area.
